At four in the morning, before I go out for a run my phone buzzes. Striker Frimston reads the screen. When I unlock the screen it reads, I’m picking you up in ten.
I grunt.
There’re too many things stopping me from taking a job that’ll be shipping me off to who the fuck knows. My first thought is Kaitlynn.
The kiss.
It wasn’t enough. In that moment, I wanted more than just a kiss. I wanted to suck her into me, inhale her.
Become one with her.
Yet, another lost opportunity.
If I could go back in time, I would do so many things differently. But life has taught me that there’s no such thing like do overs or time machines.
You have to work with what you have and use your mistakes as learning moments. Not bitter regrets.
The doorbell stops my train of thought. That was less than ten minutes. I check to see who is as crazy as Striker to be up this early. It’s him.
“You’re not ready,” he says, pushing the door open.
“Look, I haven’t figured out what I want to do but—”
“Just come with me for one day. We can use some of your intel. If this isn’t for you, they’ll pay you generously for whatever information they need from you.”
I shake my head.
“This house could use some renos, that money could come in handy.”
I nod, not telling him that money is the last thing I need. Mom married a rich guy. He’s smart with money and helped me invest my salary. It’s the best he could do for Mom, make sure her son would have financial stability once he retired. He’s also expecting me to work for him.
“Tanner, it’s just a meeting.”
“I’m done being away from home,” I answer honestly.
He grins. “Who said you have to be away? We only move when there’s a mission. Just hear them out. They pay generously—unless it’s for a good cause. Then, you work pro-bono and reject the payment for the greater good.”
Without a word, I go to my room to change. It’s just a meeting and I’ll get Frimston of off my back. If anything, whatever they pay me today would go to Blythe’s. That place could use a lot more than some TLC.
HIB isn’t just like any company. My first clue is the helicopter waiting for us by the highway. No, the guy waiting for Frimston’s car, promising to have it back when he texted. The second clue is the private jet we board in Atlanta. The equipment inside the plane is better than the one we had in our base. Seven hours after I receive the text, we land on a private runway.
Four men wait for us at the bottom of the staircase.
“Frimston,” the tallest one with light bronzed skin nods. “You took longer than we planned.”
“Blame your pilot. He arrived later than we agreed.” Striker shrugs and gives him a pat on the back. “Good to see you, T.”
They look familiar, then again, I have worked with hundreds of men who I can’t recognize.
